2008 Goals

Tibetan Alliance of Chicago (TAC) and its Tibetan community members living in Illinois long-term dream to have a permanent community center remains strong! But due to the recent brutal Chinese crackdown in Tibet this dream has been put on hold.

At this critical time, all our energies and focus are to stand united and give a global voice for our Tibetan brothers and sisters, who continue to suffer cultural genocide and denied basic human rights since China’s invasion of Tibet in 1950.

The current situation in Tibet is dire. Our thoughts, our prayers, our hearts remain with our fellow countrymen in Tibet, who have given their lives and to the unknown thousands, who have been arrested in China’s recent door-to-door search campaign—their whereabouts and physical well-being are unknown.

HELP US, HELP TIBET!
TOGETHER, LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Why does TAC need a permanent center?
So that, Tibetan Alliance of Chicago (TAC) can fulfill its endeavors to empower its Tibetan community members living in Illinois to become productive citizens of the U.S., and to preserve our fragile Tibetan culture and identity, to have a place to gather for socializing and to have a place for its members to come together to carryout the visions of democracy and protocol of the Dalai Lama, and advocate, educate and promote the cause of Tibet to the general public. Such a center will be an investment and the glue that holds the community together for generations to come.

Due to family reunification, movement between North American Tibetan communities and the birth of some 60+ children, our current rented 2,500 sq. ft. 2 room center in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, can no longer support the needs of our growing community, which has grown from the ‘original 100’, in 1992/1993 to the current 300.

What type of building does TAC seek?
The community elected Housing Committee is looking for a 7,000 sq. ft space in a semi-industrial area of West Rogers Park, Skokie or South Evanston. The ideal location would have plenty of available parking and also allow the building to be zoned so that a community center can be established. The ideal space should be large enough for three classrooms (so that TAC can continue its mission of teaching Tibetan language, history and culture to its younger community members), a kitchen to serve 300+ people, a staging area for performing arts, outdoor recreational area, TAC office space and a gallery/library area for all things Tibetan.

Once in our new space, we will be better equipped to offer programming to our non-Tibetan friends. Please contact us with your interests (language, cooking, movies, educational forums).

Fundraising goals and what has been raised thus far
Thanks to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gaytso’s, visit to Chicago in May 2007, the hard work of all the Tibetan community members and non-Tibetan volunteers, the generosity of a few corporations, foundations and individuals we have been blessed with $550,000. TAC is close to reaching its fundraising goal of $750,000. The Alliance and its community members are truly grateful to everyone’s generosity and compassion for the cause of Tibet and to our community. The sole purpose of money raised is for the purchase a building so that the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago and its members can have a community center. The $550,000 is in a separate TAC savings account.

Donations of any kind (i.e. one time donation, monthly giving, gifts of stock and/or planned giving) in any amount are greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. You may earmark your donations (i.e., center, children’s cultural classes, office operations).
