Global Day of Action for Tibet
Monday, March 31, 2008

We held a protest and candle light vigil from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the Chinese Consulate (100 W. Erie St.) to as part of the Global Day of Action for Tibet proposed by the Tibet Support Group worldwide.

The horror of China taking the Olympic torch through Tibet as a celebratory event, while Tibet's people have been crushed by China's military forces, is an abomination that must be stopped!

Objectives

  • To take the global spotlight away from the Olympic torch arriving in Beijing and turn it back onto the people in Tibet, by holding public events in our countries
  • To raise mass public awareness of the situation in Tibet
  • To raise the profile of our key demand for this day: get the Olympic torch out of Tibet!

Sunday, March 30, 2008

We held a protest rally at the Chinese Consulate (100 West Erie Street) from 11:00 AM until 6 or 7 PM. The purpose of the rally was to oppose China's action in Tibet and to protest the carrying of the Olympic Torch through Tibet. This action is part of the Global Day of Action for Tibet.

Friday, March 21 @ 6:30 PM

We held a prayer for who have lost their lives recently in Tibet at the Tibetan Community Center. It was also Full Moon Day (Tse-pa Choe-Nga, so we recited Dromla Mantras as per Office of Tibet's instruction.

Vigil and Demonstration Saturday at the Chinese Consulate in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL. March 15 - A peaceful vigil and demonstration was held at the Chinese Consulate, 100 West Erie Street. There were no incidents.

Three Tibetans Arrested in Chicago Taking Part in Demonstration

CHICAGO, IL. March 14 - Three Tibetans were arrested in Chicago on Friday during a candle light vigil and demonstration in front of Chinese Consulate. Two men and one woman who live in Chicago were arrested. Their actions came soon after the vigil and demonstration began at the Consulate.

Two of the Tibetans were arrested for stopping cars of officials leaving China's Consulate. The Chinese Consulate in Chicago filed charges against all three of these individuals. They were taken to the local police station where they were booked. Later all three were released at midnight and two men are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The event at the Chinese Consulate was in support of the Tibetans in Tibet who have been arrested and killed for peacefully protesting and demanding their freedom. It was also in support of the Tibetans in India who have been arrested for participating in a peaceful "Return March to Tibet" and demonstrating in front of China's Embassy in Delhi.

Approximately 80 individuals attended the event in Chicago. Almost all the attendees were Tibetan.

Along with chanting slogans, the participants recited prayers.

The Tibetan Alliance of Chicago, Students for a Free Tibet-Chicago, Students for a Free Tibet-Madison, and the International Tibet Independence Movement helped to coordinate the vigil and demonstration.

Further actions are scheduled for Chicago in the coming days including additional demonstrations at Chinese Consulate.

Thank you to all participants and supporters who came to the demonstration.

Losar Tse-pa Choe-Nga and a
Prayer for the Late Tom Lantos

Tom Lantos--Community CenterThe Tibetan community of chicago gathered in the community hall to pray for late US Representative Tom Lantos. We postponed the date of the prayer to coincide with Chonga Choepa (a religiously significant day for us Tibetans). After the prayer, we played the video recording of his tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in the Capital Rotunda. Here is the attachment of the photo of the community members praying in their community center. He is, in life as in death, an enduring beacon of hope for the voiceless people everywhere in the world. We will miss a very stead fast supporter of Tibet, he minced no words when it was the issue of human rights abuses in Tibet.

Following the ceremony, delicious traditional thukpa and tea was served.
