2009 Losar Celebration Cancelled
To pay homage to all the lives lost in the recent uprisings in Tibet and to respect to the deceased, it was decided during the North American Tibetan Association meeting in Toronto, Canada, that this year the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago will not celebrate Losar.
In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet, Tibetans everywhere are canceling Losar—Tibetan New Year—celebrations this year. They are doing this to mourn the deaths of more than two hundred Tibetans killed by Chinese forces in the aftermath of the March 2008 Uprising and to protest China's ongoing crackdown. In observance of the traditional one-year mourning period, Tibetans inside Tibet are refraining from public festivities on Tibetan New Year.
The first day of Losar this year falls on February 25. Candlelight and prayer vigils are being organized in place of the usual festivities, which typically lasts for at least three day. Read more about this unprecedented gesture of solidarity for Tibetans inside Tibet at Students for a Free Tibet and Phayul.com, and get involved. Tibetan Philosophy Class for Tibetan Children
Febuary 7, 2009
2:30 PM
The Tibetan Alliance of Chicago requested Dr. Ngawang Jorden La to introduce our children to the core philosophy of Buddhism in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular. Dr Ngawangla graciously agreed to give his first talk on Febuary 7, 2009 starting at 2:30 PM. He talked about Buddha and, in the same class, introduced us to the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. In days or months to come, we will try to have our children well acquainted with with the philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism by offering talks from experts in the field. Each class will be built on the previous ones, so regular attendance is important.
